AVADirect is a boutique system builder with its origins in the suburbs of Cleveland Ohio. It’s probably not one of the first names that pop into your head as a system builder, but they’ve been making everything from gaming to business systems for over a decade.
Recently, AVADirect launched their Avant Mini Cube Gaming PC which is exciting because it’s based on Corsair’s excellent Carbide 240 Air PC case. Despite the relatively small size of the mATX formfactor case, AVADirect managed to fully kit it out with an overclocked Intel Core i7-6700K and GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition. Given how much we love big [...]

At E3 earlier this year, AMD made a huge splash in the graphics market with their new Fury and Fury X graphics cards. These new graphics cards would be the first on the market to boast the revolutionary new HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) technology which AMD is betting will be the future of graphics memory. Alongside the new Fury and Fury X, AMD also quietly launched the Radeon R9 300 series, but focused very little on the new graphics cards.
As it was later revealed, AMD’s upcoming Radeon R9 300 series lineup would pretty much be a re-badge of the Radeon R9 200 series lineup. As such I was honestly a bit disappointed. While I’m [...]
Ever since we started the site several years ago, gaming computer builds have always ranked as one of the most popular article requests we get. While we originally wanted build articles to be a monthly feature on the website, it hasn’t always worked out that way due to more pressing articles taking up most of our time, but we’re definitely aiming to post build articles much more often for the next year so stay tuned.
With that said, let’s talk about the build. As usual, our $1,000 gaming build has always been one that will allow gamers to play the latest games at 1080p using high to ultra [...]
MSI recently unveiled the world’s first USB 3.1 certified motherboards at CES 2015 with the MSI X99A Gaming 9 ACK and the Z97A Gaming 6. The USB 3.1 standard doubles USB transfer bandwidth to 10Gbps from current generation USB 3.0’s 5Gbps.
The first board on display is MSI’s X99A Gaming 9 ACK, which will be a flagship motherboard in MSI’s X99 gaming motherboards lineup. The upcoming motherboard includes several USB 3.1 ports although it’ll be outfitted with the more common Type-A connector rather than the new Type-C reversible connector. MSI demonstrated the USB 3.1 ports to be capable of over 650MB/s sequential reads and [...]
CyberPowerPC is kicking off CES with a bang, and for 2015 they’re unveiling a brand new concept system they’re calling the CyberPowerPC Fang Trinity.
What’s unique about the Fang Trinity is the futuristic chassis which looks a bit like an alien spaceship. For those wondering how the chassis works, the chassis compartmentalized into a total of three compartments with each of the three compartments enclosed by a thick steel cover. The top compartment holds the GPU and three 2.5″ drives, the bottom left compartment holds the power supply, a slimline optical drive, a 3.5″ HDD, and a 2.5″ drive, and the bottom right compartment holds [...]
Late last year, AMD introduced the Hawaii based Radeon R9 290/290X along with the Bonaire based Radeon R7 260/260X which utilized AMD’s updated GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture. AMD’s updated GCN architecture, which we’ll refer to GCN 1.1, supported new features such as improved compute performance, on die audio processing, and improvements to AMD’s PowerTune technology to offer a faster, more power efficient chip than its GCN 1.0 cousins.
Unfortunately, AMD’s GCN update didn’t cover the mid-range GCN 1.0 based GPUs such as the Radeon R9 270/R9 270X or the Radeon R9 280/280X, which meant [...]
A couple months ago, we were fortunate enough to be one of the first tech review sites to get the opportunity to review the MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard which we felt was one of the best all-around sub-$200 gaming motherboards. It was rock solid, had a fantastic layout, and a premium feature-set well worth its pricetag.
At the time of the review of the Gaming 7, MSI had already planned to release an even more premium gaming motherboard, the Z97 Gaming 9 AC, but it was still under wraps at the time. We were told however, that the MSI Z97 Gaming 9AC would be a wireless model and have a significantly upgraded audio system that would [...]
It’s been quite a while since our last gaming PC build here at Custom PC Review, but computer hardware hasn’t really changed all that much in the past couple months with most of the industry waiting on the holiday season to make their big releases. Our previous $1,500 gaming PC build from back in 2013 was already based off Intel’s latest Haswell processor architecture and Intel isn’t expected to be releasing a successor to the aging processor until this holiday season, while AMD and Nvidia aren’t expected to release new graphics cards until the end of the year at the [...]
Aside from MSI, the only other motherboard vendor to show off X99 motherboards here at Computex is ASRock, who had two motherboards on display. Unlike MSI, ASRock’s motherboards were well hidden among their lineup of Z97 motherboards.
The two motherboards ASRock had on display was the X99 Extreme4 and the X99 Extreme6. What’s interesting about these X99 motherboards is that the design between the two are quite similar with the exception that the Extreme6 includes additional USB 3.0 support, PCIe 1x slot, etc.
Both motherboards include the new LGA 2011-v3 socket to support Intel’s upcoming Haswell-E processors and will both support [...]
