Beyerdynamic Custom Game Review

Introduction

For the most part when gaming there are just two senses that matter – sight and sound. This is why having a top quality headset is one of the most important elements to winning on the virtual battlefield. Traditionally, gaming headsets have always been manufactured by gaming peripherals companies that make headsets that are either average or below average quality, but with the dearth of options from premium audiomakers, until recently there really wasn’t much of a choice.

Several years back, renowned German audio products maker Sennheiser jumped into the gaming headset market and saw such success that they now have several models of [...]

Review: Steelseries Siberia Elite Gaming Headset

SteelSeries New Flagship Siberia Gaming Headset

Earlier this year at CES 2014, SteelSeries invited us to their suite to check out a couple brand new products they were coming out with. While we were browsing their suite, SteelSeries showed us the new SteelSeries Sensei Wireless Gaming Mouse along with the SteelSeries Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller. While those were interesting products, what really caught our eye was a product they had introduced several months earlier – the SteelSeries Siberia Elite Gaming Headset, which was prominently displayed on one of the display shelves.

Most of you who follow the PC gaming scene in the past decade have probably seen [...]

Review: Razer Kraken 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

The Kraken. Now in 7.1 Virtual Surround.

A couple years back, the only option to get any sort of surround sound on a computer was to either purchase a physical 5.1/7.1 surround sound system or purchase an expensive, bulky, and generally crappy sounding true 5.1 surround sound headset. If you think those are both pretty bad options, you’re probably not alone which is why a number of companies are investing in virtual surround sound software which use principles of psychoacoustics to simulate 7.1 channel audio in headsets that only have two physical drivers.

Now recently it seems like gaming peripherals giant Razer has also gotten into the virtual surround bandwagon [...]

Review: Creative Sound Blaster ZxR Sound Card

Creative’s Z-Series Flagship

Back in 2011, Creative unveiled the Recon 3D series of soundcards based off their (at the time) new Sound Core 3D chipset, which were decent soundcards for gaming and general audio, but didn’t include any real audio processing hardware (DACs, ADCs, etc.) other than the Sound Core 3D chipset itself. While the Sound Core 3D chipset is definitely impressive especially with its audio processing ability and lower power consumption, the problem with this is that with proper headphones and speakers, the sound quality on the Recon 3D series soundcards couldn’t match older Sound Blaster X-Fi soundcards such as the Sound Blaster X-Fi [...]
