AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X Review

The AMD Ryzen Flagships

AMD launched their newest Ryzen CPUs to great fanfare back in March and while we found performance to be good in our launch review of the Ryzen 1700, we noted that there were quite a few growing pains that needed to be fixed before Ryzen could really shine against Intel. As such, rather than publishing another review of Ryzen on motherboards using incomplete BIOS firmware and badly optimized Windows, we decided to wait it out until AMD and its motherboard partners roll out the badly needed updates to allow Ryzen to really shine in all its glory.

As such, today we’ll be finally reviewing the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X, the flagship AMD [...]

How to Find Your Motherboard’s Manufacturer, Model, and BIOS Version

Get to Know Your PC

As a PC owner, one of the most important things to know is the manufacturer, model and BIOS version of the motherboard you have in your system. This is one of the first questions I ask people when they ask me if they can upgrade their system or when they ask me for help because something isn’t working correctly. The motherboard is the one piece of hardware in your system that interconnects everything else so any hardware upgrades will need to be compatible with the motherboard. Depending on the motherboard manufacturer and how active they are on updates, the motherboard’s internal software, or BIOS/UEFI, also needs to be upgrade to support newer [...]

Review: Thermaltake Tt eSports Poseidon Illuminated Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Simple, Functional, Affordable

When it comes to the recent revival of mechanical keyboards, a couple companies such as Razer or Das Keyboard take most of the credit, but a number of companies were there from the beginning – one of them being Thermaltake. After starting off quite early in the game with the well designed Meka G1 mechanical keyboard, then the crazy feature rich Meka G-Unit, Thermaltake hasn’t really done much with their mechanical keyboards other than rebrand the Meka G1 and Meka G-Unit over and over with new paintjobs.

To be honest, we were really beginning to wonder when Thermaltake would finally actually unveil a brand new mechanical keyboard, [...]

Intel Launches Latest Flagship Ivy Bridge-E HEDT Processors

For consumers looking for top tier performance, there’s currently nothing faster than processors based off Intel’s Sandy Bridge-E platform, and while the lineup is still the creme of the crop for consumer based desktop applications, the microarchitecture underneath Sandy Bridge-E is based off technology that’s nearly two years old. While Intel has been busy developing and releasing mainstream processors based off newer microarchitectures such as Ivy Bridge and Haswell, the HEDT (High End Desktop) platform hasn’t really changed since late 2011, until now.

Just in time for IDF (Intel Developer Forum) 2013, Intel recently announced the release [...]

Best CPU Cooler Roundup Review: Corsair, Cooler Master, Noctua, Phanteks, Zalman

Battle of the Titans

Up until the release of Sandy Bridge processors back in early 2011, overclocking was something generally reserved for only the most hardcore gamers and enthusiasts who wanted to push their systems to the limits. Overclocking required countless hours of tinkering and testing, which was generally a bit too complicated for mainstream users.

With the release of Sandy Bridge however, the landscape of overclocking has really changed dramatically. Significant overclocks may now be had with simple motherboard overclocking buttons or 5 minute adjustments in the BIOS, which greatly simplified the once complicated and confusing task.

With overclocking [...]

Best Photo/Video Editing PC Under $1,400 [January 2013]

Powerful Photo/Video Editing at a Budget

Looking through my list of my featured computer builds, one build I felt really needed updating is the photo/video editing build as it’s one of the most requested builds along with the $1,000 gaming PC build, so for this month (well, the couple more days left for this month), that’s what we’ll do.

Now there’s a couple good photo/video editing builds I can think of, but when it comes to price to performance, I think the $1,000 – $1,400 range definitely provides the most bang for the buck, so today we’ll be doing a build that fits right into the $1,400 budget. Those [...]
