Consumer Reports No Longer Recommends Microsoft Surface Devices

Consumer reports recently released an announcement that it no longer recommends Microsoft Surface lines of tablets and laptops due to durability concerns.

According to a study conducted by Consumer Reports National Research Center on 90,741 tablets and laptops its subscribers purchased between 2014 and beginning of 2017, an estimated 25% of all Microsoft laptops and tablets will exhibit problems by the end of the second year of ownership. PNY Unveils Prevail Pro Mobile Workstation at SIGGRAPH 2017

At SIGGRAPH 2017, PNY announced that they’ll soon be jumping into the mobile workstation market with their latest PNY Prevail Pro P3000 and Prevail Pro P4000 mobile workstations.

The new mobile workstations which are just 0.78-inches thin and weigh in at just 4.8Lbs, feature up to a 15.6-inch 4K UHD(3840×2160) display, an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, up to 32GB of DDR4 2400MHz RAM, and Nvidia’s Quadro Mobile P3000 for the Prevail Pro P3000 and the Quadro Mobile P4000 (Max-Q) for the Prevail Pro P4000. Dell Reveals Precision 5520 Anniversary Edition at Private SIGGRAPH 2017 Event

At a special event at SIGGRAPH 2017, Dell revealed the Precision 5520 mobile workstation, commemorating 20 years of Dell Precision workstations.

Crafted in a beautiful brushed aluminum finish, the Dell Precision 5520 mobile workstation is according to Dell the thinnest and lightest 15-inch mobile workstation on the market. iFixit Gives Microsoft’s Surface Laptop a Zero in Repairability

The Microsoft’s Surface Laptop is the latest victim to iFixit’s teardown. The result? Not pretty.

This is the first time in a long time that a device has received a repairability score of zero. Reading through the teardown article, it seems like the most the complaints stem from the fabric cover. iFixit states that the cover is glued on using plastic ultrasonic spot-welds and is impossible to put back on once removed.

In its final verdict, iFixit wrote:

The Surface Laptop is not a laptop. It’s a glue-filled monstrosity. There is nothing about it that is upgradable or long-lasting, and it literally can’t be opened without destroying [...]

Laptop Prices Expected to Increase 5-15% in 2Q2017

Digitimes reports that the prices of retail laptops are expected to increase by 5% to 15% in 2Q2017 to offset the rising cost of components.

Components like DRAM, SSDs, and displays are experiencing a shortage due to a shift in manufacturing. Many component manufacturers are prioritizing production for the lucrative smartphone market which has unfortunately left a shortage of PC components.

The shortage has already began affecting both the DRAM and NAND markets last year. Mainstream SSDs are expected to increase by 10% due to the NAND shortage and PC vendors have already begun seeing SSD price quotes [...]

Razer Updates 14-inch Razer Blade: Adds Kaby Lake, UHD Screen Option

If you’ve been eyeing a new Razer Blade 14-inch gaming laptop, you’ll be glad to know that Razer just refreshed the components onboard, now featuring Intel’s recently released Kaby Lake 7th Generation Intel Core i7 Processor and an option for a 4K UHD touchscreen, which will be available for the first time on the 14-inch model.
