AMD 12nm Ryzen Pinnacle Ridge CPUs Rumored to Launch February 2018

According to a report from Digitimes, AMD has revealed to its motherboard partners that it plans to launch its next generation 12nm Ryzen CPUs in February of 2018. The new CPUs will be manufactured on Global Foundries upcoming 12nm process.

The upcoming 12nm Ryzen CPUs will be codenamed Pinnacle Ridge and will feature both a die shrink as well as architecture improvements over current generation Summit Ridge Ryzen CPUs. VisionTek Pocket SSD Review

SSD Performance in a Flash Drive Formfactor

Aside from the insanely great performance, shock resistance, and low power consumption, one benefit of SSDs is the ability for them to be extremely compact. As a SSD only requires silicon rather than spinning disks, SSD form factor is really only dictated by how a company chooses to arrange the chips onboard.

As such, we’re starting to see quite a few external SSDs take advantage of this form factor flexibility. One such product is the VisionTek USB 3.0 Pocket SSD which crams a full SSD into a form factor just slightly bigger than your average flash drive.

VisionTek USB 3.0 Pocket [...]

Rumored AMD Zen Chipset Issue May Increase Cost for Motherboard Manufacturers

According to a recent article published by Digitimes, motherboard makers may be facing increased costs due to an issue in AMD’s upcoming motherboard chipset. Citing industry sources, Digitimes claims that the issue stems from a design flaw in the ASMedia USB 3.1 chip included in the chipset, which causes “…USB 3.1 transmission speeds drop dramatically as circuit distance increases”. As such, board makers are forced to add additional retimer, redriver, or additional USB 3.1 chips in order to make USB 3.1 function properly on the upcoming motherboards. ASMedia has denied such allegations citing that their “…product’s signal, stability [...]

Review: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 AC LGA1150 Motherboard

MSI’s Flagship Gaming Motherboard

A couple months ago, we were fortunate enough to be one of the first tech review sites to get the opportunity to review the MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard which we felt was one of the best all-around sub-$200 gaming motherboards. It was rock solid, had a fantastic layout, and a premium feature-set well worth its pricetag.

At the time of the review of the Gaming 7, MSI had already planned to release an even more premium gaming motherboard, the Z97 Gaming 9 AC, but it was still under wraps at the time. We were told however, that the MSI Z97 Gaming 9AC would be a wireless model and have a significantly upgraded audio system that would really [...]

Review: Silicon Power Armor A30 2TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive

Ultra Rugged Portable Storage

Though cloud storage’s getting a lot of buzz, there’s really no simpler or faster way to transfer data from point A to B than a portable, external drive. For digital artists, video editors, and enthusiasts alike, portable hard drives and flash drives have become the most convenient way to backup or transfer data at a low cost.

While portable storage has allowed us to easily backup or transfer our data, the increase in storage capacities also means we’re now travelling with a lot more of our previous data than ever before. Despite this, we’ve seen far too many folks with their life and soul on a single fragile [...]

Computex 2014: MSI X99 Motherboard, USB 3.1 Support

MSI’s booth included a very early sample of a motherboard that looks like a possible X99 based successor to the X79A-GD65. In huge font, MSI advertises the board as the world’s 1st DDR4 X99 motherboard which is interesting considering ASRock is showing off not one, but two DDR4 compatible X99 motherboards here at the show as well.

The motherboard includes the new LGA 2011-v3 socket which is expected to support Haswell-E when it’s released later this year. In terms of features, this board includes MSI’s Military Class 4, eight DDR4 DIMM slots, four PCIe x16 slots, two PCIe x1 slots, M.2 support, SATA Express support, and SATA 6Gb/s support as [...]

Review: MSI Z97 Gaming 7 LGA 1150 Motherboard

All Around sub-$200 Gaming Motherboard

For those who’ve been closely following the Z97 launch these past couple weeks, you’ll know that it hasn’t been anywhere near the smoothest chipset launch in Intel history. Despite Intel’s NDA set for May 11, we’ve literally known practically everything about Z97 for months and almost every motherboard maker has been either leaking their own products or breaking some sort of NDA to get their products some early media coverage.

With Intel’s NDA now expired and Z97 chipset based motherboards now rolling out at major retailers (with Intel’s new Haswell Refresh CPUs following suit), today we’ll [...]

Review: ASRock Z87E-ITX Mini-ITX Motherboard

High Performance in a Bite Sized Package

With Intel’s focus shifting towards power efficiency rather than maximum performance at all costs, it’s becoming increasingly unnecessary for gamers and enthusiasts to purchase bulky and cumbersome giant cases with giant motherboards with tons of cooling capacity. This is why over the past couple generations of Intel CPUs, a number of motherboard manufacturers have begun embracing the mITX formfactor, which has traditionally been reserved for low power systems.

With that said, today we’ll be reviewing out the ASRock Z87E-ITX motherboard, which as you may expect is a mITX formfactor motherboard based off Intel’s [...]

Best High End Gaming Workstation PC Build Under $2,500 [August 2013]

Work Hard, Play Harder

For those of you keeping up on our PC build guides over the past couple of months, in June we put together a very well rounded Haswell Gaming PC for under $1,500 and last month we put together a solid Haswell based Photo/Video Editing Workstation PC for under $1,200. Unfortunately, while the Haswell Gaming PC can do some workstation tasks quite well and while the Photo/Video Editing Workstation PC can play some casual games quite well, they’re fairly purpose oriented and don’t cross over very well.

Due to many e-mails requesting help on building a system that would be not only a superior gaming system, but also a superior workstation, [...]

Transcend StoreJet 25M3 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive Review

Military Grade Portable Storage

Over the past decade, portable hard drive capacities have gotten larger and larger prompting us to store more of our important data onto these large backup drives yet hard drive durability has remained pretty much unchanged. Many times a single accidental drop can cause complete data loss, which is a big issue especially for those of us who tend to throw around these portable hard drives and use them in situations where drops may occur.

This is why today we’ll be reviewing the Transcend StoreJet 25m3 1TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive. The StoreJet 25M3 is a portable hard drive from Transcend’s ruggedized line of portable hard drives [...]
