Wikipedia to shut down in protest of SOPA

Tom LiJanuary 16, 2012

Jimmy Whales, founder of the hugely successful open source data base Wikipedia, officially announced today that the English branch of the site will go dark on Wednesday in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). The Site will go down for 24 hours at 12AM EST.

Wikipedia had once stated in their SOPA Initiative Post that “The Wikimedia Foundation is going to support whatever action the community decides to take.” The executive decision to shut down the site is clearly an act in support of the voice of the community.

According to Wales, an estimated 25 Million English users visit Wikipedia daily, the outage could spell disaster on their productivity.
