Along with the recent refresh of SanDisk’s Optimus SSD lineup and the introduction of the SanDisk Optimus MAX, SanDisk also announced the launch of their new Lightning Gen. II enterprise SSDs which now fully support 12Gb/s SAS. By using 12Gb/s SAS, SanDisk Lightning Gen. II SSDs are capable of up to double the performance capable from SATA/SAS 6Gb/s.

“The new Lightning Gen. II SSD product family doubles interface speeds over previously available 6Gb/s SSDs, providing the highest performance possible for mission-critical and virtualized data center application workloads. Additionally, the Lightning Gen. II family of drives has a feature-rich, robust design that provides powerful error correction and detection technology, full data path protection, instant secure erase, thermal monitoring, and die fail recovery. Lightning Gen. II SSDs deliver industry-leading predictable performance, superior reliability and maximum value with a five-year warranty.”

SanDisk will be introducing three new Lightning Gen. II SAS SSDs: the Lightning Ultra Gen. II, the Lightning Ascend Gen. II, and the Lightning Eco Gen. II.

  • The Lightning Ultra Gen. II is the Lightning Gen. II’s flagship SSD designed for write intensive application workloads. The SSD is capable of random read/write performance of up to 190,000/100,000 IOPS and sequential read/write performance of up to 1,000/600 MB/s. It’s available in capacities of 200GB to 800GB and carries a 5 year, 25 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) warranty.
  • The Lightning Ascend Gen. II is the Lightning Gen. II’s mid-tier SSD designed for mixed use application workloads. The SSD is capable of random read/write performance of up to 190,000/80,000 IOPS and sequential read/write performance of up to 1,000/600 MB/s. It’s available in capacities of 200GB to 1.6TB and carries a 5 year, 10 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) warranty.
  • The Lightning Eco Gen. II is the Lightning Gen. II’s entry-level SSD designed for read intensive application workloads. The SSD is capable of random read/write performance of up to 180,000/35,000 IOPS and sequential read/write performance of up to 1,000/500 MB/s. It’s available in capacities of 1TB to 1.6TB and carries a 5 year, 3 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day) warranty.

The SanDisk Lightning Gen. II series SAS SSDs will be available Q3 2014. More information is available via the SanDisk website.
