AMD Launches EPYC 7000 Series Processors: Up to 32-Cores/64-Threads, 8-Channel DDR4, 128 PCIe Gen 3 Lanes

AMD’s Zen based server platform, EPYC (codename Naples), has been in the works for quite some time and it finally appears ready for prime time. At AMD’s recent EPYC launch event in Austin, Texas, AMD fully detailed their new server platform designed to challenge Intel’s dominance in the server market.

AMD EPYC 7000 Series Processor

Launching today is no less than twelve CPU SKUs in the AMD EPYC 7000-Series processor lineup. The new CPUs will feature up to 32-cores/64-threads, 8-channel DDR4 memory support (up to 2TB of memory per CPU), 128 PCIe lanes, a dedicated security subsystem, and an integrated chipset.

AMD’s [...]

AMD Teases Threadripper CPU: 16 Cores and 32 Threads for Consumers

Confirming previous rumors, it turns out that the Ryzen 7 1800X is not the top-end chip for AMD. At AMD’s 2017 Financial Analyst Day, AMD officially confirmed a new 16 core and 32 thread Ryzen CPU codenamed Threadripper along with a new HEDT platform.

This powerful chip is likely AMD’s direct answer to Intel’s 12-core Core i9-7920X and the beginning of their assault on Intel’s dominance in the workstation and datacenter. AMD also has a 32-core, 64-thread chip codenamed Naples in the works as well. Details are currently scarce on Threadripper, though the chip is expected to make its appearance at Computex. Recent rumors have also indicated that [...]

AMD Stock Tanks by 24%, Biggest Single Day Loss in Over 12 Years

AMD’s stock fell by a gut-wrenching 24.4% on Tuesday, marking the worst single day stock performance for AMD in over 12 years.

Source: Google

The fallout occurred shortly after AMD released its earnings. Despite a solid 18.3% increase in quarterly revenue, low gross margins worried investors. During the quarter, AMD’s gross margins were 34%, which is a mere 2% improvement over the last year. Investors had hoped AMD would be able to achieve 36-40% gross margins thanks to sales of higher margin Ryzen CPUs which were launched in early March.

In an interview, AMD’s CEO Dr. Lisa Su [...]

AMD Prepares 32-Core Naples CPU to Battle Against Intel Xeon, Launch Expected in 2Q2017

Not even a month has passed since AMD launched their Zen based Ryzen desktop CPUs and AMD is already preparing their assault against Intel’s Xeon server dominance with their upcoming Zen based Naples CPUs.

The new server CPUs, which AMD refers to as SoCs will feature 32-cores/64-threads, eight memory channels, up to 2TB of DDR4 memory, and 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes. This is spec for spec far more powerful than its chief competition, the Intel Xeon E5-2599A v4 processor which features a paltry 22 cores, four memory channels, up to 1.54TB of DDR4, and 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes. AMD claims that the Naples SoC is able to offer 60% better performance and 122% more memory [...]

Initial AMD Ryzen CPU Shipments to Top One Million Units

AMD Ryzen 7 CPU | Source: AMD

Within 24 hours of AMD’s Ryzen 7 1800X, Ryzen 7 1700X, and Ryzen 7 1700 announcement, pre-orders for the newly announced CPUs quickly drove the three new products to Amazon’s CPU Best Seller’s list despite the fact that the CPUs aren’t even expected to ship until March 2nd.

While pre-order rankings and information has been limited from other vendors, similar numbers may have also been seen across the industry as a recent article by Digitimes reports that AMD’s initial shipment of Ryzen CPUs are expected to top one million units. Motherboard makers are also [...]

AMD Ryzen CPU Confirmed for March, Vega and Naples in 2Q, 7nm, Zen 2 and Zen 3 on the Way

AMD’s latest earnings call was a mixed bag as revenues declined over 3Q2016 and are expected to continue to decline heading into 1Q2017. However, despite the quarterly setbacks, AMD had a positive 2016 overall with increased revenues and lower debt over the previous year.

What’s even more exciting for AMD however, is the amount of high profile product launches coming this year. During AMD’s earnings call, AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su confirmed that Ryzen will launch with “…widespread system and channel availability expected on day one” in early March. This confirms a previous leak that AMD will launch Ryzen during or before GDC. This is no [...]

Intel Xeon E5-2699 V5 Skylake-EP Images Leaked, Expected to Feature 32 Cores, 64 Threads

Intel’s upcoming Skylake-EP platform CPUs aren’t expected to launch until mid-2017, but engineering samples of the upcoming flagship part, the Intel Xeon E5-2699 V5 is already beginning to show up on Chinese websites.

According to a recent listing on TaoBao, the Intel Xeon E5-2699 V5 will feature 32-cores and 64-threads which appears to be a direct response to AMD’s upcoming Zen architecture based Naples server platform which will feature 32-cores and 64-threads as well. Intel’s current generation Xeon E5-2699 V4 features just 22-cores and 44-threads. The Intel Xeon E5-2699 V5 ES chip also shows a frequency of 2.10GHz, which is 100MHz lower than [...]

AMD Zen Based Summit Ridge CPUs, X370 Chipset Motherboards to Launch at CES 2017

In a recent article by Digitimes, AMD may be gearing up to launch their new Zen based desktop CPUs with its corresponding X370 chipset based motherboards at CES 2017 in January. According to sources in the supply chain, AMD is already cutting prices of current inventory in order to clear room for new inventory.

While AMD is planning on launching their new Zen CPUs at CES, the sources believe that mass shipments aren’t likely to begin until after February and as such, profits from the new chip sales aren’t likely to be realized until 2Q2017.

AMD’s Zen based CPUs are some of the most highly anticipated AMD CPUs in over half a decade. AMD is [...]

AMD 32-Core Zen Based Naples CPU Benchmarks Leaked in Geekbench Database

Although AMD’s upcoming consumer Zen CPU, codename Summit Ridge, has been all the talk in the past few months, an even bigger, more important chip coming down the pipeline is AMD’s upcoming 32-core Zen based chip, codename Naples. This is important because Intel’s most profitable sector is in the enterprise where they hold over 99% marketshare in the CPU market. With AMD planning to jump back into the market, it could significantly change the landscape especially considering their upcoming Zen architecture is promising massive gains in performance.

While AMD hasn’t released many official specifications or benchmark figures on its new CPU, some [...]
