In a new report from ITworld, it looks like Micron may be on track to begin shipping their 3D XPoint based products by the end of this year.
After branding their 3D XPoint based products as QuantX at Flash Memory Summit last year, Micron has been relatively silent about the upcoming technology. However, with all the buzz surrounding Intel’s launch of their first 3D XPoint based SSD, Micron has returned to the spotlight. However, unlike Intel, Micron is rumored to be licensing QuantX to other manufacturers as well as ship QuantX in the form of DDR-style memory DIMMs as well.
3D XPoint has been touted as the next generation flash memory technology that [...]
Several months ago, a leaked spec sheet detailed an upcoming Intel 3D XPoint SSD, the Optane SSD DC P4800X, which was officially launched today finally proving that despite numerous delays, 3D XPoint isn’t the vaporware many of us expected it to be.
Initially launching in a 375GB Add-in-Card (AIC), the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X is designed for high write enterprise workloads. As such, performance is heavily oriented towards random read/write workloads and quality of service. In the above specs, we can see that Intel doesn’t even bother listing the sequential performance numbers. As a drive designed to be used for high write applications, the [...]
After Intel and Micron announced 3D XPoint several years ago, drives based on the technology were mostly just talk. This changed recently at CES as many of Intel’s partners began showing off their latest notebooks equipped with the new 3D XPoint based Optane Memory drives. As a result, many believe that Intel may begin shipping Optane to retailers shortly.
Recently, Intel also recently quietly launched their Optane mini-site which contains some very unfortunate news for those with older systems looking forward to Optane to provide that much needed speed boost. According to the Intel Optane micro-site, Optane Memory is a platform feature and as such, there are [...]
Intel’s collaboration with Micron to develop 3D XPoint storage has been a long time in the works and for the first time, we’re getting a concrete idea of how Intel’s upcoming Optane 3D XPoint-based enterprise SSDs will perform.
According to a recently leaked spec sheet by Chinese technology website, Techbang, the upcoming Intel Optane DC P4800X a very admirable drive. Coming in the HHHL form factor, the Optane DC P4800X features up to 375TB of storage and features the PCIe NVMe interface which allows for sequential read/write speed of up to 2,400/2,000MB/s, and 4K random performance up to 550,000/550,000 IOPS respectively.
Intel’s 3D XPoint has been long touted as a revolutionary new non-volatile memory technology ever since Intel announced it back in 2015. Unlike traditional NAND, 3D XPoint uses a mesh of storage cells that can greatly improve access times compared to conventional storage. According to Intel’s internal testing, Optane SSDs can reach speeds up to 10x faster than current generation SSDs. However since its launch, 3D XPoint has been more talk than anything else with both Intel and development partner, Micron, doing little more than talking about the performance, applications, and missing potential launch dates.
That said, this time it appears that Intel may [...]
Intel 3D XPoint has been quite a hot topic in the storage world since its introduction last year and recent rumors of Intel’s upcoming 3D XPoint based Optane SSDs along with leaked roadmaps have suggested that 3D XPoint may ship later this year.
Unfortunately for those patiently waiting based on previous rumors, Intel delivered some bad news at their recent 3Q2016 earnings call. According to Intel CEO, Brian Krzanich, 3D XPoint will not be shipping by the end of this year. However, Intel has already begun sampling partners and expects to qualify 3D XPoint by the end of this year. A ramp in 3D XPoint isn’t expected until 2017 and information about when [...]
It’s been well over a year since Intel and Micron launched 3D Xpoint, but we’ve seen very little additional information from both companies regarding the upcoming technology or its products. A recent leak from Chinese publication Benchlife however, sheds some light onto Intel’s upcoming product, named Optane, which will feature 3D Xpoint technology.
The information comes in the form of a spec sheet which details the upcoming Intel Optane Memory 8000p Series including performance and capacities.
Here we can see that Intel’s Optane 8000p Series will contain two drives, a 16GB model and a 32GB model. The 16GB model will be rated [...]
