Intel is allegedly adding a new high-end processor segment for HEDT. Recent reports point towards four new Skylake-X CPUs and two KabyLake-X CPUs.

The Skylake-X series will include two product lines: the i9-7900X and the i9-7800X. The KabyLake-X series will only feature two processors: the i7-7740K and the i7-7640K. Skylake-X CPUs will have a maximum TDP of 160 while KabyLake-X will have a maximum TDP of 112W.

The top chip of the bunch is the i9-7920X with 12C/24T. It will carry 16.5MB of L3 cache, and 44 PCIe lanes. Clock speed has yet to be disclosed, but the i9-7920X, i9-7900X, and the i9-7820X will feature a third clock state called Turbo Boost 3.0, which would push the CPUs to reach even higher clocks than Turbo Boost 2.0.

Processor Cores/Threads L3 Cache PCIe Lanes Base Clock Turbo Boost 2.0 Turbo Boost 3.0 Launch Date
Core i9-7920X 12C/24T 16.5MB 44 TBD TBD TBD August
Core i9-7900X 10C/20T 13.75MB 44 3.3GHz 4.3GHz 4.5GHz June
Core i9-7820X 8C/16T 11MB 28 3.6GHz 4.3GHz 4.5GHz June
Core i9-7800X 6C/12T 8.25MB 28 3.5GHz 4.0GHz N/A June
Core i7-7740X 4C/8T 8MB 16 4.3GHz 4.5GHz N/A June
Core i7-7740X 4C/4T 6MB 16 4.0GHz 4.2GHz N/A June

All Skylake-X series CPUs will support quad-channel DDR4 2,666MHz memory, while the KabyLake-X CPUs only support dual channel memory. The Skylake-X CPUs are also rumored to support AVX 512. Both families of CPUs would leverage Intel’s X299 “Basin Falls” chipset.

The new CPUs, with the exception of the i9-7920X, are expected to launch in June after the PC Gaming show. The i9-7920X will be launching in August.
