Updating GCN for the Mid-Range Segment

Late last year, AMD introduced the Hawaii based Radeon R9 290/290X along with the Bonaire based Radeon R7 260/260X which utilized AMD’s updated GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture. AMD’s updated GCN architecture, which we’ll refer to GCN 1.1, supported new features such as improved compute performance, on die audio processing, and improvements to AMD’s PowerTune technology to offer a faster, more power efficient chip than its GCN 1.0 cousins.

AMD Announces Radeon R9 285, Available September 2

This past weekend, AMD celebrated 30 years of graphics at an event held at their Austin, Texas campus where they introduced several new products, including a new graphics card which will likely be based off the rumored “Tonga Pro” GPU core.

The new graphics card, the AMD Radeon R9 285, will come packed with 1792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, and 32 ROPs. At stock, the cards will ship with a core clocks of 918 MHz and a memory clocks up to 5.5 Gbps. It’ll also have 2GB of GDDR5 running off a 256-bit memory interface. Nvidia Bundles Watch Dogs with Qualifying GeForce Graphics Cards

In response to AMD’s Never Settle Forever bundle, Nvidia has recently launched their own gaming bundle, which gives prospective buyers of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 660, 660 Ti, 670, 680, 690, 760, 770, 780, 780 Ti, or Titan Black a free copy of the highly anticipated open world action game, Watch Dogs. Watch Dogs, developed by the famous Ubisoft Montreal (Assassin Creed, Far Cry, etc.) game studio, makes heavy use of Nvidia’s TXAA and HBAO+ technologies to achieve its stunning visual effects.

AMD, Nvidia Revamps Gaming Bundles


Bundling games with graphics cards seems to be a popular marketing strategy for both Nvidia and AMD. With the release of a number of AAA titles on the horizon, both companies revamped their gaming bundles to include some awesome looking, soon-to-come games.

AMD Launches The Radeon HD 7970 AKA World’s Fastest Single GPU Card

“NEVER SETTLE. The world’s first 28nm GPU architecture. Engineered to humiliate the competition.”

Looks like all the rumors of the HD 7970’s launch was right on spot. The AMD HD 7970 is officially launched per AMD’s own press release and it looks like they’re claiming that it’s the world’s fastest. Of course not only are they claiming the the world’s fastest, but also the world’s first 28nm graphics chip. Bravo to AMD for pulling this off!
