Megaupload met the last of its visitors on Thrusday, January 19th, 2011, after the Feds decided to shut it down for good.

According to the Department of Justice, Megaupload’s founder, Kim Dotcom, as well as several company executives, were charged with violating piracy laws.

Moments before Megaupload was officially shut down, it released a statement saying that the allegations that it violated piracy laws was blown out of proportion:

“The fact is that the vast majority of Mega’s Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch,”

Megaupload had an estimated 150 million registered users, and received about 50 million visits a day.
