For CES 2017, Toshiba showed off its new BG series SSD in the M.2 1620 BGA and M.2 2230 form factor for ultraportables and mobile devices.
Powered by Toshiba BiCS 3D TLC NAND along with a Toshiba controller, the Toshiba BG series demonstrates the capabilities of Toshiba’s 3D TLC, scaling up to capacities of 512GB in a form factor as small as 16x20mm. In order to achieve this, Toshiba integrated the controller and the NAND into a single package, and as the drive utilizes NVMe’s Host Memory Buffer (HMB) feature which utilizes system DRAM to act as a buffer, DRAM is not required.

When Intel launched their 600P series SSDs several months ago, it was met with a very lukewarm reception. Aside from having some decent performance in extremely light workloads and being priced very competitively for a M.2 NVMe SSD, the TLC powered drive simply didn’t compete well with competitors on performance or endurance. As such, it was reviewed very poorly by a number of review sites including TechSpot and Tom’s Hardware.
In light of these reviews, it appears that Intel may be backpedaling on their previous endurance ratings.

OCZ recently announced the TL100 SSD designed for the entry level. Powered by TLC NAND, the OCZ TL100 is a SATA based SSD which will be available in capacities of only 120GB and 240GB, and will feature performance up to 550MB/s sequential reads and 530MB/s sequential writes. Both drives will also feature 4K random read and write performance up to 85,000 IOPS and 80,000 IOPS respectively.

For over two years, Samsung has been the only mass manufacturer of 3D NAND and being the first to market SSDs with the new technology, they’ve reaped some serious rewards. In a recent report by analyst firm TrendFocus, Samsung owns a staggering 40.8% share of total SSDs shipped and their 3D NAND accounts for nearly all of the 17% of all NAND shipped today.

Over the past couple days, the storage world’s been abuzz as Samsung’s latest SM961 PCIe NVMe SSD has shown up online for pre-order.
The Samsung SM961 is the update to the Samsung SM951, and along with it comes with some huge improvements. Performance for example on the Samsung SM961’s random read is marked at 450K IOPS, a 50% increase over the SM951’s 300K IOPS. What’s even more impressive is that the SM961 is expected to be able to hit 400K IOPS in random write, a 4x improvement over the SM951. Plextor first unveiled the M8PeY at this year’s CES. This new PCIe SSD features the Marvel 88SS1093 controller and 15nm Toshiba TLC NAND. Toshiba recently announced the SG5 series SSDs designed for the client space. The new SG5 series SSDs will utilize Toshiba 15nm TLC (Triple Level Cell) NAND along with a custom Toshiba controller solution. Toshiba’s controller solution features Toshiba’s proprietary QSBC error correction algorithms. Performance on the SG5 is rated at up to 545 MB/s sequential reads and 388 MB/s sequential writes.
The Toshiba SG5 will be available in both 2.5″ 7mm SATA or M.2 SATA form factors and will be available in capacities of up to 1TB. The Toshiba SG5 is expected to sample in 1Q2015.

Holy crap, Sony has jumped on the SSD train? Since when?!
I kid of course, the Japanese tech giant tried its hand in external SSDs a while back. With the launch of the SLW-M series, the company is looking to make some splash around the globe and get its cut of pie in the SSD market.
The MLW-M series focuses mostly on consumer needs. Equipped with the Phison PS 3310-S10 controller and Toshiba’s A19nm TLC NAND, the MLW-M Series is rated to have a maximum sequential read/write of 560MB/s and 5300MB/s respectively. The Phison S10 + Toshiba A19 TLC combo is a common pairing found in many of today’s consumer-oriented SATA SSDs.
