SoftBank Makes Massive $4 Billion Investment into Nvidia

No question about it, Nvidia is red hot these days thanks to its superior graphics processing technology driving massive increases in datacenter and automotive technology revenue.

It’s then no surprise that Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank wants a piece of the action as a recent report from Bloomberg claims that SoftBank has slowly acquired a$4 billion stake in Nvidia for 4.9% share of the company. This will make SoftBank the 4th largest shareholder of Nvidia behind Fidelity, Vanguard, and PRIMECAP.

While there’s no question that Nvidia is an strong company with strong financials and a strong product to back it up, it’s interesting [...]

Nvidia Volta Titan X Leaked by Intern?

Though Nvidia’s GPU roadmap shows that Volta consumer graphics card won’t be coming until 2018, a Facebook post may have leaked the very first glimpse at what the Titan X Volta could look like.

The card in question sports a never-before-seen cooling shroud bearing the “Titan” logo. It uses an 8-pin and 6-pin power connector. Aside from the obvious appearance features, sharp-eyed users have also pointed out that it lacks the SLI connector. In its place are little notches (just above the logo) that bear resemblance to the NVLink connectors on the recently announced Nvidia GV100 workstation card.

While we know [...]

Nvidia Plans on Launching New GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 for Mobile

Nvidia is expected to launch lower-clocked versions of its GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 mobile GPUs.

Images captured from a system show a version of a GTX 1080 with all cores enabled but running at 1,290MHz base clock. This is much lower than the 1,556MHz base clock on the dekstop GTX 1080. By lowering the core clock, it lowers the power and thermal envelope of the GPU. This allows it to be fitted into thinner gaming laptops.

The card scored a 1,7000 in 3D mark, 4,000 lower than a fully-fledged desktop GTX 1080. Not much was shown regarding the new GTX 1070 during the presentation.

The low-powered variant of the [...]

Nvidia Reportedly Planning to Launch GeForce GT1030 to Compete Against AMD RX 550

The release of the $79 AMD RX 550 is giving AMD a huge advantage in the ultra low end segment in the graphics card space and according to a recent report at WCCFTech, Nvidia is reportedly planning to strike back.

The upcoming low-end solution from Nvidia will not feature the GTX moniker, and will just feature the GT prefix. The card may be dubbed as the GeForce GT 1030/1040 and will feature a minuscule 35W power profile.

The upcoming card is expected to feature the GP108 GPU which was previously expected to be for mobile applications. GP108 will contain just 521 SMPs, 32 TMUs, and 16 ROPs. Just as the Polaris 12 GPU in the Radeon RX 550, the GP108 won’t [...]

Nvidia Driver May Cause Inconsistent Benchmark Results in Rise of the Tomb Raider

Youtube channel AdoredTV recently uncovered a potential shortcoming in Nvidia’s drivers which can cause performance dips when a Nvidia graphics card is paired with a Ryzen CPU.

When paired with a Nvidia graphics card, AMD’s Ryzen 1800X falls short – sometimes by as much as 40% – when compared to an Intel Core i7-7700K running Rise of the Tomb Raider. GPU statistics collected during benchmark runs reveal that the Ryzen-based system wasn’t pushing the GPU to 100%, causing it to lag behind the Intel-based system. This was consistent in both DX 11 and DX 12 benchmarks. Normally, this would indicate a bottleneck on the CPU, which was strange [...]
