AmpliFi Announces Kickstarter for Teleport VPN System

AmpliFi, the consumer brand of popular enterprise grade networking company, Ubiquiti, recently announced a new kickstarter campaign for a product they call Teleport.

Currently about 40% funded, the AmpliFi Teleport works with AmpliFi’s Mesh Router system and essentially acts as a VPN for users when away from the home. By simply connecting to the Teleport while on the go, users can easily access a home network while outside the home as if they were at home allowing access to shared folders, wireless printing, home automation devices, security systems and more.

Those interested in the AmpliFi Teleport system can now make a pledge at the AmpliFi [...]

Is Incognito or Private Browsing Mode Actually Private?

Chances are if you’ve used a modern internet browser in the past few years, you probably know that each browser has some sort of private mode. In Google Chrome, it’s called Incognito, in Microsoft Edge, it’s called InPrivate, and in Mozilla FireFox, it’s called  Private Browsing.

While many have used this type of private browsing functionality, one of the biggest questions that I get is, “Is private browsing actually private?” and the simple answer to this is no.

In fact, each of the browsers specifically warn you before surfing the internet in their respective private browsing modes that while private browsing will keep [...]

Ubiquiti Networks Releases Numerous Security Patches as SEC Consult Exposes Command Injection Vulnerability

In a recent advisory sent out by SEC Consult’s Vulnerability Lab, SEC Consult advised that a security flaw had been confirmed in at least four Ubiquiti Networks devices with as many as an additional 38 devices possibly vulnerable to the security issue.

According to the advisory, a command injection vulnerability exists in the “pingtest_action.cgi” script in the devices. If an attacker is able to lure a user to click on a special link or go to a malicious website, it would allow an attacker to gain control of the networking equipment. This issue is largely attributed to a decade old version of PHP, PHP/FI 2.0.1, used by the devices.

The Best Mesh WiFi Router System of 2019

Mesh: The Solution to Spotty Home Wi-Fi

Let’s face it. If you live in a moderately sized house or you have a lot of wireless devices, home wireless will suck for you no matter how expensive or how well placed your router is. Up until recently, there were relatively few solutions. One solution was to place Wi-Fi range extenders which would help improve home Wi-Fi coverage. But using Wi-Fi range extenders have significant drawbacks such as the need to use separate SSIDs from the router, meaning clients need to disconnect and reconnecting to the range extender in order to use it, and range extenders typically utilize just one radio on one band which means wireless [...]

Netgear Orbi Review

The Fastest Home Mesh WiFi System

Over the past few weeks, we’ve reviewed several home mesh Wi-Fi systems including the Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD, the Linksys Velop, and the Eero and found that while each one had its own unique benefits, none of them were perfect.

Today we’ll be reviewing the Netgear Orbi which is Netgear’s home mesh Wi-Fi solution. Like the Linksys Velop, the Netgear Orbi features three radios in each unit, allowing one of the radios to serve as a dedicated backhaul for better performance between the Orbi nodes.

Specifications Manufacturer Netgear Model Orbi Home WiFi System (2-Pack) Wi-Fi Bands IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac Radios 3 [...]

Review: Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC HD WiFi Access Point (UAP-AC-HD)

The King of 5GHz Wireless AC

Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to review the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO which we found to be an excellent Wi-Fi access point solution for anyone looking for an easy way to significantly improve their Wi-Fi coverage, performance, and reliability in the home, office, or commercial deployment.

Of course, the UniFi AP AC PRO isn’t the fastest access point Ubiquiti makes and for those who want the absolute maximum performance, Ubiquiti also offers the UniFi AP AC HD, Ubiquiti’s flagship UniFi access point sporting an even faster, newer, beefier wireless chipset paired with an even more powerful antenna array.

Given [...]

Testing the Apple MacBook Pro Touchbar Wi-Fi: Does 3×3 MIMO Make a Difference?

The Quest for Wi-Fi Perfection

The new Apple MacBook Pro (Touchbar, 2016) is quite the mixed bag. On one hand the thinner and lighter design, the beautiful Retina display, and the cool new TouchBar makes it one of the best MacBook Pros ever, but on the other hand, lackluster hardware, USB-C exclusivity, and the extremely high pricetag makes it a lot less appealing than its predecessor.

While internal components such as the CPU, graphics, battery size, etc. may be a bit uninspired, one component that Apple hasn’t skimped on for this generation is the internal Wi-Fi. Rather than stick with the usual 802.11AC with a 2×2 MIMO antenna setup typically [...]

Review: Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway (USG)

Enterprise Class Router at a Consumer Class Pricepoint

Several days ago, we got our first glimpse into Ubiquiti’s enterprise networking gear lineup when we reviewed the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO, an impressive Wi-Fi access point which delivered enterprise class performance and enterprise class features at a reasonable price.

Today we’ll be reviewing a significantly different product in the Ubiquiti UniFi lineup, the Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway (USG), which despite its name implying that it’s purely a firewall appliance, is actually a combination of an enterprise class router along with firewall [...]

Review: Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO WiFi Access Point (UAP‑AC‑PRO)

Supercharge Your Wi-Fi

One of the rising stars in the enterprise networking world is Ubiquiti Networks, a company which has become very well known for producing competitive enterprise grade networking equipment for less than half the cost when compared to similar products from more well known brands such as Cisco, Aruba, HP, Aerohive, Xirrus, etc.

Among their most popular products is the Ubiquiti UniFi APs (Access Points), which has become very popular for not only businesses, but also home users who have become tired of overpaying for top end consumer Wi-Fi routers that seem to never work.

One of the most popular access points is the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO [...]

Linksys Velop Review

Introduction

Back at CES earlier this year, one of Linksys’s biggest announcements was their new Velop Mesh Wi-Fi System which is Linksys’s first entry into the Mesh Wi-Fi market.

As we recently got our hands on a test unit, today we’ll be reviewing Linksys Velop to see if it’s actually lives up to its claims.

For our review, Linksys provided us with the Velop 3-Node Mesh Wi-Fi System. The Linksys Velop will also come in a one node or two node pack, but additional single nodes can always be added to the system to improve Wi-Fi coverage in the home.

Specifications Manufacturer Linksys Model Velop Wi-Fi Bands IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac [...]
