Qualcomm Strikes 7nm Chip Deal with TSMC

According to DigiTimes, TSMC has won the bid to manufacture Qualcomm’s baseband chips on the 7nm node. The chip order is for the baseband processors only and not for application processors. Qualcomm is still making a decision between Samsung and TSMC for the production of its next-generation APs, and is waiting to see the second generation 7nm products from both companies before it makes a decision.

Both Samsung and TSMC will be switching from HKMG to EUV process technology at the 7nm node. Samsung announced that its 7nm Low Power Plus transistors made using EUV will be available in 2018, while TSMC said its 7nm EUV node will be ready by 2019.

iPhone 8 on Schedule for September-October Launch

Apple’s iPhone 8 is on track to launch in September and go on sale in October, according to a recent report by Economic Daily News.

This new statement contradicts previous beliefs that the iPhone 8 will be delayed due to poor yields of the OLED displays. Analysts predicted that the iPhone production will be severely hampered by supply after the initial launch.

Newly improved production yield rates have seemingly resolved this issue. Volume production of components will ramp up in June. iPhone manufacturing companies including Foxconn, Winston, and Pegatron are also aggressively recruiting and training new workers to prepare for the production of new [...]

TSMC Engineer Charged for Stealing Trade Secrets

A former TSMC Engineer was charged for stealing trade secrets to a competitor, according to a report by DigiTimes.

The former TSMC engineer, Hsu, was recently accused of stealing trade secrets on TSMC’s 28nm process to give to China-based Shanghai Huali Microelectronics (HLMC). TSMC’s 28nm process is a proven process which has been used in many chips including Apple SoCs, Qualcomm SoCs, Nvidia GPUs, AMD GPUs, and more. Hsu had recently taken a job at HLMC, but was arrested before he could start.

Of course this isn’t the first time this has occurred. A number of China-based memory chip makers have been aggressively poaching talent from Taiwanese [...]

Security Concerns May Limit Acquisition of Toshiba Memory to US Companies

Good news for US companies planning to make a run for the memory business of struggling Japanese conglomerate, Toshiba, as sources from a recent article from Reuters reports that the Japanese government is ready to block the sale of Toshiba memory to suitors that it believes to be a “risk to national security” to Japan. Countries deemed a risk to the national security of Japan seemingly includes everyone except the US, but the biggest concern is a sale of the business to China as it may give China access to “key capabilities” it’s desperately trying to obtain.

Currently, there are quite a few companies expected to make a bid for the [...]
