With the upcoming IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) Consumer Electronic Show in Berlin set to begin on September 4th, many companies have begun to announce their latest products. One of the notable announcements came from Asus with a new flagship gaming laptop, the GX700. It’s been a little over half a year since Samsung launched their 3D NAND based Samsung 850 PRO, and it looks like Toshiba and SanDisk are finally making some inroads with their own 3D NAND technology as well.

According to recent press releases from both companies, Toshiba and SanDisk announced that they’ve completed development of the world’s first 48-layer 3D NAND product using their BiCS (Bit-Cost Scalable NAND) technology. According to a recent joint press release, Toshiba and SanDisk has recently announced plans to build a new fab to replace Fab 2 in Yokkaichi Japan to help the companies’ transition to 3D NAND technology. Toshiba/SanDisk expects to begin construction on the new fab in September this year with a completion date sometime in Summer 2015.

Given the difficulty and increased cost of shrinking NAND further than 1xnm, 3D NAND is expected to be the logical successor to current 2D Planar NAND. According to a recent press release, flash storage giant SanDisk is announcing the industry’s first 4TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Solid State Drive (SSD), the SanDisk Optimus MAX.
