How to Migrate to an SSD Using Samsung Data Migration Software

So you read our article on why you need an SSD and you took our recommendation to pick up a Samsung SSD. Now you’ve got the SSD in your hands and you’re wondering how in the world you’re going to migrate your Windows 10, 8.1, 8, or 7 installation along with all your programs and files to the new SSD. While you could just bite the bullet and re-install everything from scratch, doing so can be extremely time consuming.

Luckily, one of the features that sets Samsung SSDs apart is the Samsung’s Data Migration Software which can make the migration process from your old HDD or SSD to your new one easy and pain free. Today we’ll show you how to use [...]

Samsung T5 2TB Review

64-Layer 3D NAND, USB 3.1 Gen 2

Last year I was fortunate enough to be among the first to review the Samsung T3 Portable SSD. The drive was small, durable, fast, available in capacities up to 2TB, and relatively good looking making it not only my favorite portable SSD, but also my most highly recommended as well.

Of course, with Samsung’s annual release cycles, Samsung recently launched the new Samsung T5 Portable SSD which we’ll be reviewing today.

Samsung Portable SSD T5 Specifications Manufacturer Samsung Model T5 Capacity 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB Interface Type-C USB 3.1 (Gen 2), USB 3.0, USB 2.0 Transfer Speed Up to [...]

Samsung 960 EVO 1TB Review

TLC NAND and PCIe Done Right

When Samsung launched the Samsung 960 series SSD at their annual SSD Global Summit back in September, they promised two new drives – the Samsung 960 PRO and the Samsung 960 EVO.

Last month, we reviewed the Samsung 960 PRO which is designed for performance enthusiasts and professionals. In our testing, it exceeded our expectations making it the fastest M.2 PCIe SSD we’ve ever tested to date. Unforutnately, the Samsung 960 EVO wasn’t available at the time however, Samsung was hopeful that early samples would be available soon.

Fast forward and today we’ll be reviewing the Samsung 960 EVO, which is Samsung’s first [...]

SSD vs HDD Pros and Cons Comparison

Years ago, if you wanted to buy or build a new computer, the only option is to purchase an HDD, or a Hard Disk Drive however, more recently, another option that has become quite commonplace in the market is the SSD, or Solid State Drive. SSD marketers like to claim that SSDs are hundreds if not thousands of times faster than HDDs, require less power, and are more durable than the tried and true HDD, but prices of SSDs are relatively expensive compared to HDDs. Is it really worth the extra money for a SSD? Let’s explore.

The HDD

HDDs have been around since its invention in the 1950’s and while the drives themselves have gotten smaller, [...]

Samsung Bundling Watch Dogs 2 with Select Samsung SSDs, Curved Gaming Monitors

In a recent announcement, Samsung revealed that they’ll be bundling the upcoming Watch Dogs 2 game with the purchase of select Samsung SSDs 500GB and above or Samsung curved gaming monitors for the holiday season.

Watch Dogs 2, the sequel to Watch Dogs, is one of the most highly anticipated games of this year. The game is an open world action adventure game following hacker Marcus Holloway, a hacker who goes around a fictional version of the city of San Francisco taking down the city’s ctOS 2.0 surveillance system.

Samsung will begin offering the Watch Dogs 2 bundle beginning now through December 31, 2016 or while supplies last.

The list of [...]

Samsung 960 PRO 2TB Review

Holy Smokes

With SATA SSDs now at their limit, last year Samsung introduced the Samsung 950 PRO which marked the first time Samsung had introduced a NVMe PCIe SSD for the consumer market. Although Samsung already had OEM PCIe SSDs for quite some time and given that the technology was ready to go, it was only a matter of time until the Samsung 950 PRO was brought into the retail market. Given that the Samsung 950 PRO is a Samsung SSD and not a Samsung smartphone (too soon?) the Samsung 950 PRO did very well in the market quickly establishing itself as the defacto performance NVMe PCIe SSD to buy since it was launched last year.

Of course if you’re Samsung SSD, [...]

6 Reasons Why You Should Buy a SSD If You Don’t Own One Already

When we first started covering the world of SSDs back in 2012, the industry was still in its infancy. At the time, the performance benefits of SSD technology were clearly greater than HDDs, but due to high prices, low capacities, and incomplete OS support, it just simply wasn’t the time.

However, fast forward to 2016 and today the SSD landscape is a much different place than it was almost 5 years ago. Prices are much less expensive, capacities now reach up to 4TB in a single drive, and modern operating systems such as Windows 10 fully support SSDs right out of the box.

As such, here are 6 of the top reasons why you should buy a SSD [...]

Samsung 850 EVO 4TB Review

It’s Big. Really Big.

At Flash Memory Summit earlier this year, Samsung announced their new 48-layer 3D V-NAND and along with that they announced that they’ll be using the new NAND in their 850 EVO SSD, pushing capacities up to a staggering 4TB. Considering 1TB was the largest capacity just 4-5 years ago, a 4TB drive designed for the consumer is a really huge deal, no pun intended. As such, when we got the opportunity to test the monstrous 4TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, we jumped on it.

Samsung 850 EVO Specifications Manufacturer Samsung Model 850 EVO Capacity 120GB 250GB 500GB 1TB 2TB 4TB Controller Samsung MGX Samsung MHX NAND Samsung 32-layer TLC 3D [...]

Toshiba OCZ VX500 512GB Review

Updating the Mainstream

Ever since Toshiba’s acquisition of OCZ back in 2014, we’ve seen a gradual move away from not only the OCZ branding, but also many Toshiba inspired internal changes in its SSDs. OCZ, which changed its name to OCZ Storage Solutions last year, is now Toshiba OCZ and the SSDs themselves are now practically re-branded Toshiba products with slightly modified firmware, additional bundled software, and modified retail packaging for the consumer SSD market. Why Toshiba hasn’t dropped the entire OCZ brand as a whole I’m not quite sure, but it seems like they’re preparing to drop the axe.

Along with the change in [...]

Crucial MX300 750GB Review

Crucial’s First 3D TLC SSD

For over two years, Samsung has been the only mass manufacturer of 3D NAND and being the first to market SSDs with the new technology, they’ve reaped some serious rewards. In a recent report by analyst firm TrendFocus, Samsung owns a staggering 40.8% share of total SSDs shipped and their 3D NAND accounts for nearly all of the 17% of all NAND shipped today.

As such, we know that people want 3D NAND and if you’re a NAND maker without a 3D NAND product, it’s about time to step up your game. Micron, being one of the world’s largest NAND producers is stepping up in a big way with their latest Crucial branded SSD, the [...]
