Continuing our coverage of CES 2017, we arrive at Zotac, a company best known for manufacturing NVIDIA graphics cards. While the company did have the full range of GTX 10 series cards on display, including their recently announced GTX 1080 Mini, it was clear that Zotac has another passion: making powerful miniature PCs.

Zotac at CES 2017

This passively-cooled powerhouse is specifically tailored to HTPC usage with its completely silent operation. However, we did see a demo with [...]

CES 2015: Zotac’s New GTX 970 Core Graphics Cards, ZBOX Pico PCs

At their CES suite this year, Zotac showed off several new and upcoming GeForce GTX 970 based graphics cards and ZBOX Pico mini-PCs.

The first new graphics card introduction is the Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Core Edition, which removes some of the fluff from the original GTX 970 AMP! Extreme card and reduces the size of the cooler to fit into two slots. Zotac also shaved off some weight from the card by using lighter materials, but still managed to keep the full backplate along with the triple fan design.

The Zotac GTX 970 AMP! Extreme Core Edition will feature clock speeds of up to 1,228 MHz [...]

CES 2015: Gigabyte Brix, Brix s Packs Intel’s New Broadwell CPU

At a press conference here at CES 2015, Gigabyte announced an update to its BRIX mini PC barebones platform. The refreshed BRIX and BRIX s will now come packed with Intel’s 14nm Broadwell Ultra Low Voltage CPUs and HD 5500 graphics.

Specifically, the refreshed BRIX and BRIX s will be configured with the Intel Core i3-5010U, Core i5-5200U, or Core i7-5500U. Not only do these new 14nm processors offer higher compute and graphics performance, they should be considerably more power efficient compared to their Haswell predecessors.

Aside from the new processor, there aren’t many significant changes to the Brix. The new BRIX will [...]

Computex 2014: Zotac’s Sphere Shaped Mini-PC, Fanless Zbox C Series Mini-PCs

As one of the more prominent players in the mini-PC space, Zotac showed off a number of new systems here at Computex, but one of the more interesting systems on display was the Zotac Zbox Sphere OI520, which as its name implies is pretty much a Zbox in a chassis that resembles a sphere. For those who remember the Google Nexus Q, the Zbox Sphere OI520 is literally a splitting image of Google’s now defunct device; however, unlike the ARM A9 powered Nexus Q, Zotac’s Zbox Sphere OI520 packs a serious punch with the Haswell based Intel Core i5-4200U processor and Intel HD 4400 Graphics. The Zbox Sphere OI520 also includes 802.11 AC Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, [...]

Review: Plextor M6e 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD

M.2 Has Landed

When we take a look at the history of HDD storage technology, it hasn’t really been all that interesting for a very long time. Sure HDD capacities have increased by leaps and bounds and costs have decreased a fair amount as well, but performance hasn’t really improved the way that CPUs, GPUs, or memory have.

SSDs on the other hand are still considered relatively new technology, but they have far exceeded the performance limitations of current SATA 1.5Gb/s, SATA 3Gb/s, and SATA 6Gb/s interfaces. With SATA 6Gb/s currently being the biggest bottleneck when it comes to storage technology, it’s easy to see why something had to be done to keep [...]

Whereas our previous run-in with the BRIX at Computex Taipei included Ivy Bridge based mobile processors, the latest update now come included with Haswell based mobile processors along with a slightly refined chassis as well.

The updated BRIX ultra compact PCs are expected to be available with either the Haswell based Intel Celeron 2955U, Core [...]
