Although AMD’s upcoming consumer Zen CPU, codename Summit Ridge, has been all the talk in the past few months, an even bigger, more important chip coming down the pipeline is AMD’s upcoming 32-core Zen based chip, codename Naples. This is important because Intel’s most profitable sector is in the enterprise where they hold over 99% marketshare in the CPU market. With AMD planning to jump back into the market, it could significantly change the landscape especially considering their upcoming Zen architecture is promising massive gains in performance.

Without a doubt, 2014 was a tough year for AMD. Although the company managed a 4% increase in revenue to $551 billion, the company reported a net loss of $403 million for the year thanks to a $364 million net loss reported in the 4th quarter.
As expected, AMD’s computing and graphics division is primarily to blame for the company’s troubles. Segment revenue here is down 15% sequentially and 16% from 2013. Seeing as AMD hasn’t made any significant CPU or GPU announcements for most of this year, this is not surprising. Well, it’s been quite an insane year for acquisitions in the storage industry and it looks like the Avago/LSI has saved the best for last.
Singapore based Avago Technologies recently announced that they’ve recently made their largest acquisition ever, snapping up LSI Corporation at the tune of a whopping $6.6 billion. LSI stockholders can expect $11.15 in cash per share of common stock held at closing, around a whopping 41% higher than LSI’s closing price on Friday.
