AMD Reveals Ryzen APUs, Ryzen 2 and Threadripper 2 at CES 2018

Earlier this week, AMD addressed some key questions regarding its upcoming Ryzen APUs.

To set most at ease, the APUS will be fully compatible with AM4 motherboards, with only a BIOS updated needed for newer CPU support. This lowers the cost of entry into the Ryzen platform, with tremendous upgrade options available later on.

Zen APUs are coming in Febuary which feature the Global Foundries 14nm process found in the current generation Ryzen CPUs. Both models will feature quad cores, but the Ryzen 5 2400G features SMT, a base clock of 3.6GHz/boost clock of 3.9GHz and 11 Vega CUs for $169. The Ryzen 3 2200G will lack SMT, be clocked at 3.5GHz/ boosts up to [...]

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X Review

The AMD Ryzen Flagships

AMD launched their newest Ryzen CPUs to great fanfare back in March and while we found performance to be good in our launch review of the Ryzen 1700, we noted that there were quite a few growing pains that needed to be fixed before Ryzen could really shine against Intel. As such, rather than publishing another review of Ryzen on motherboards using incomplete BIOS firmware and badly optimized Windows, we decided to wait it out until AMD and its motherboard partners roll out the badly needed updates to allow Ryzen to really shine in all its glory.

As such, today we’ll be finally reviewing the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X, the flagship AMD [...]

AMD Issues Update on Ryzen Addressing Thread Scheduling, Temperature Reporting, Power Plans, and SMT

In a recent blog post, AMD’s Robert Hallock recently posted an update on some of the big issues currently surrounding the new Ryzen processor including thread scheduling, temperature reporting, power plans, and SMT.

Thread Scheduling

Previously some media outlets reported that there may be an issue with the Windows 10 thread scheduler and Ryzen, but it appears that the thread scheduler is actually working properly in Windows 10. This has been verified Sysinternals Coreinfo v3.31 topology logs and the only reason an issue was believed to have existed is because an older version of Sysinternals Coreinfo was used.

Temperature [...]

AMD Ryzen CPUs In-Stock, But Where’s the AM4 Motherboards?

Last week, AMD launched their highly anticipated Ryzen CPUs to huge fanfare and for the most part, the CPU has lived up to its expectations. While there is still quite a bit of controversy over whether or not it’s a strong CPU for gamers, other applications that are highly multi-threaded such as video editing or 3D modeling show Ryzen to be very clearly competitive against its Intel counterparts.

AMD Ryzen 7 CPU | Source: AMD

Within 24 hours of AMD’s Ryzen 7 1800X, Ryzen 7 1700X, and Ryzen 7 1700 announcement, pre-orders for the newly announced CPUs quickly drove the three new products to Amazon’s CPU Best Seller’s list despite the fact that the CPUs aren’t even expected to ship until March 2nd.

While pre-order rankings and information has been limited from other vendors, similar numbers may have also been seen across the industry as a recent article by Digitimes reports that AMD’s initial shipment of Ryzen CPUs are expected to top one million units. Motherboard makers are also [...]
