Mercury Research recently released their analysis of 2Q2016 market report for the GPU market and it contains quite possibly the best news we’ve heard for AMD in a very long time.
According to the report, AMD’s average total market share increased for the first time in 4 years for both desktop and mobile segments. The last time an uptick in AMD’s GPU market share happened was during the GPU cryptocurrency mining craze back in 2012. As discrete desktop GPUs drove most of this growth in market share, this is likely due in large part to AMD’s strategic launch of mainstream Polaris GPUs which has seen unwavering demand since its launch [...]
Although GDDR5X has only just recently hit the market, GDDR6 is already on the way and Samsung recently took the opportunity to share some information on the upcoming memory standard at the HotChips conference currently taking place in Cupertino, CA.
According to Samsung’s presentation at the show, GDDR6 will start at 14Gbps and is expected to reach 16Gbps at its full potential, which higher than the 14Gbps GDDR5X is expected to reach at its full potential. Current generation Micron GDDR5X being used on Nvidia’s recently launched GeForce Titan X is only capable of up to 10Gbps. GDDR6 will be rated at 1.35v, which is the same as GDDR5x. However, [...]
Nvidia recently launched the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB which was confirmed at a Chinese tech conference not too long ago.
Whereas in previous generation cards, a difference in onboard memory is just a difference in onboard memory, the new GeForce GTX 1060 3GB not only has just 3GB GDDR5 memory, but it also has one of its SM units disabled giving it just 1152 CUDA cores rather than the 1280 on the full GP106 die. Other specifications include a 192-bit memory interface, 48 ROPs, and 72 TMUs. The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is expected to be clocked at 1506/1708MHz core/boost and 8GHz effective memory out of the box.Model GTX 1060 3GB GTX 1060 6GB GTX 1070 GTX 1080 GTX Titan [...]

With the launch of Nvidia’s Pascal based GeForce GTX 1080, GTX 1070, and GTX 1060 desktop chips now complete, Nvidia announced today that they’re bringing Pascal to the notebooks as well.
Nvidia’s launch today will bring three new notebook cards to the mix, the GeForce GTX 1080, GTX 1070 and GTX 1060. These three cards will strongly highlight the importance of the move to TSMC’s 16nm FinFET fabrication process as they’re no longer the cut down versions of the desktop cards we’re used to seeing in previous generation cards.
Nvidia is also no longer advertising these as “m” GPUs given that they’re no [...]
It was previously believed that Nvidia would be producing their GPUs on TSMC’s 16nm FinFET exclusively, but a new report from Korean business website Chosun Biz confirms that Samsung and Nvidia recently concluded talks to manufacture Nvidia’s “Pascal” architecture GPUs on Samsung’s 14nm FinFET process as well. Samsung is already testing the new GPUs on their production lines at the Giheung manufacturing plant and production of the new GPUs are expected before the end of the year.
This is good news for Nvidia. As a fabless semiconductor company, it’s crucially important to diversify production across multiple fabs ensuring that supply [...]
At an event in Asia, NVIDIA officially confirmed the existence and specifications of the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB variant. The folks over at Videocardz reported on a picture of a presentation slide which showcases both the 6GB and 3GB variants of the Pascal GP106 based GPU, which will differ much greater than initially thought, with the 3GB variant having one SM module disabled, giving it a 128 fewer CUDA cores than the currently released 6GB model.
NVIDIA Confirms GTX 1060 3GB Specifications
As we can see in the image above, the GTX 1060 will indeed be available in a 3GB variant, just as everyone initially thought when the GTX 1060 was merely a [...]
